“… Scattering Landscapes… which provided variety in its atmospheric collection of six movements… The format held the listeners’ attention throughout and a repeat hearing would certainly be welcome at a future concert.”

Review
“Farewell to Weiss (he was a contemporary of JS Bach) was inspired by the idea of remembrance and loss, in this case based upon Weiss’s Tombeau sur la Mort d M Catjetan and in the form of an elaborate fantasia, with variations… a piece very much worth a rehearing.”
Dave Robson, Stockton and Darlington Times, 25/6/2010.

Weardale Variations

Stepping Stones Stanhope

Stepping Stones Stanhope

Bishop Auckland Music Society commission. Composed 2008. Duration 16 minutes.Premiere
18th September 2009, Bishop Auckland Music Society. Performed by Robert Scarmadella.

Review
….offers a musical portrait in sound of Weardale through the seasons, from the bleakness of a Dales winter, through the seasons-the return of life in the Spring and, as the musical colouring lightened and gained in tonal richness, the warmth of summer and autumn before the first hints of the return of winter. A recurring theme within the work depicts the river at the stepping stones at Stanhope, providing an aural link for the listener. A performance that caught the essence of the countryside and certainly inspired a wish for further hearings and further musical portraits of the North-East countryside…..

Turning the Tide

Composed 2008. Duration 16 minutes.

Premiere
24th March 2007, Darlington Piano Society, Performed by Bobby Chen
Commissioned for this concert by Elizabeth Swift, in celebration of her 60th birthday.

Review
…The haunting effects of the opening to…Turning the Tide, created a mood of mystery in keeping with the quiet beauty of the east Durham coast before man and machinery.
It is a work in five sections which traces the rise and fall of the industrial age, the first and final sections creating an image of nature before and after this intrusion. Industry itself is portrayed with great clangour in the second and fourth sections.
Well wrought and highly evocative, Turning the Tide, beautifully played by Chen, certainly deserves a place in North-East public performance schedules……Dave Robson, Darlington and Stockton Times,31/3/2007

Review
….In Stephanie Cant’s Turning the Tide, composed for Chen for Darlington Piano Society in 2007, he showed his performance has matured over the years, with the descriptive elements of the changing nature of the East Durham coast from the natural to the industrial and back again even more intensely defined…..Darlington and Stockton Times 9.11.2012

Review of the Darlington performance
….an atmospheric sound picture of gently falling snow recalling childhood memories of the hard blizzards of 1962. Like her North East landscape pieces of recent years, this too, deftly catches an aura of place and time…Dave Robson, Darlington and Stockton Times 30/10/09

Review
…he then turned his attention to…Durham composer Stephanie Cant, whose lively and engaging four movement Sonatine is very much of today, though firmly based in established forms;dynamic in the impulses that drive the scherzo, a cathedral-like calmness to the central meditation, and with a jaunty, drice, florid even, energy giving impulse to the final Rondo with its return of opening themes.
